I have been teaching about the Pythagorean Theorem this week and I made reference to the fact that the Scarecrow quoted the Pythagorean Theorem when the Wizard gave him a brain. I decided today to look the scene up on youtube so that I could share it with my students tomorrow. Come to find out the Scarecrow misquoted the theorem! This makes it even more fun to share with them tomorrow. Can you find the mistake?
Huh, good catch! I've seen the movie a zillion times, and never caught that. Pythagoras has been rolling in his grave ever since! I guess that just points out the futility of rote memorization: now if he WORKED with some right triangles--lining a field, for instance--he' really understand the workings of the Pythagorean Theorem!

I think he needs help with the definition of an isosceles triangle... never caught that before!
I don't think isosceles triangles have a hypotenuse. It should have been a right triangle. Let us know if the kiddos get it.
